Local woman crowned Miss New Jersey

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) - June 15, 2008 Ashley Fairfield was crowned Saturday night at the Ocean City Music Pier, beating out 21 other contestants. It was the third time she had competed for the state title.

Fairfield is an aspiring dance teacher who is studying for a degree in performing arts at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. She succeeds Amy Polumbo, who went public with an alleged blackmail attempt just weeks after she won the crown last year.

Polumbo said an anonymous blackmailer sent embarrassing party photos of her to pageant officials, trying to force her to resign. However, the officials eventually decided the pictures didn't merit stripping Polumbo of her title.

In a farewell video aired during this year's pageant, Polumbo spoke about learning and growing stronger from that and other experiences during her time as Miss New Jersey.
