Stocks continue slide

NEW YORK - June 24, 2008 The market opened lower, took a tumble and then recovered, only to turn lower by the closing bell.

The Dow lost nearly 35 points to 11,807.

The S&P 500 dropped 3 points to 1,314.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 17 points to 2,368.

Declining issues held a 7-to-3 lead over advancers on the New York Stock Exchange. NYSE volume came to 4.5 billion shares. Nasdaq volume topped 2.1 billion shares traded.

Weighing on market sentiment today was word of a big drop in consumer confidence. Crude futures settled slightly higher at $137 a barrel.
