Police warn of stimulus check scam

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. - July 2, 2008

The reports come from Egg Harbor Township Police who say several residents of the township have been called by someone claiming to be from the IRS. The caller, according to police, asks people for personal information including Social Security numbers and bank account information.

Other people have reported receiving e-mails that link to a form that gathers personal information that is commonly used in crimes related to identity theft.

Officials want to remind people that the IRS will not contact anyone by phone or email about Economic Stimulus payments. Officials already have the information they need, including direct deposit information that was on the latest tax returns

Anyone who has fallen victim to this scam should contact their local police department as soon as possible.
