NJ transportation drivers place 3rd & 4th in national competition

Cape May Court House, N.J. - July 9, 2008

The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored Fare Free drivers Brian Fitzpatrick of Cape May and David Smith of Lower Township for their third and fourth placement in the Community Transportation Association of America Paratransit Roadeo.

The race pitted the top community transportation drivers in the nation against each other in an obstacle course featuring their daily duties like wheelchair securement and driving skills.

Participants also had to complete a written exam evaluating their knowledge of Federal ADA regulations, rules of the road and passenger service standards.

Each local driver was within points of taking home first prize.

Smith and Fitzpatrick were contestants in a similar New Jersey event last month that was sponsored by the New Jersey Council on Special Transportation and New Jersey Transit.

Smith won the top prize in the New Jersey competition.

Fitzpatrick was second.
