Double shooting in Wilmington

October 12, 2008 7:31:01 PM PDT
On Sunday at approximately 1:44 p.m., officers on routine patrol heard several gunshots coming from the area of 4th and Clayton Streets. The officers responded to the area and observed a large crowd in the 1500 block of West 4th Street. The officers discovered two victims on the south side of the street, amongst the crowd.

Officers initiated first aid to the first victim, a 27-year-old male, who appeared to have sustained at least two gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

The second victim, a 24-year-old male, had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Patrol units secured the scene and were attempting to gather witnesses.

Detectives and forensic officers responded and took over the investigation.

Both victims were then transported to the Christiana Hospital by ambulance personnel.

The first victim succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital and was pronounced dead at approximately 2:20 p.m.

The second victim's head wound did not appear to be life-threatening and is being treated at the hospital.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect approached the first victim in, appeared to speak briefly, then pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired several shots.

Two of the shots struck the first victim in the upper torso. One of the shots ended up striking the second victim, who was further down the block on 4th Street.

According to detectives the two victims were not together and it does not appear that the second victim was targeted by the suspect.

Anyone with any information concerning this incident is asked to call Detective Pat Connor at 576-3630.
