Wilmington hits record 24 homicides for 2008

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - December 7, 2008 Police say the 24th homicide victim, identified as 25-year-old Brandon Brinkley, was found shot in a car in 2700 block of Northeast Boulevard on Saturday morning.

The previous record of 23 homicides was set in 2006. Last year, there were 14 homicides in the city.

This year also has seen at least 122 shootings, breaking the previous record of 106 set in 1996.

Councilman Michael Brown says one of the problems is that residents don't cooperate with police because of fear of retaliation. He also says gun and sentencing laws must be strengthened and inmates should not return to the streets without rehabilitation.
