State police say at least on person is dead, and another has been airlifted to Temple Hospital.
The view from Chopper 6 HD shows a damaged tractor trailer and at least two other heavily damaged vehicles.
Investigators say the rig was travelling at a high rate of speed, and could not stop in time when it came upon stop-and-go traffic just after the Conshohocken curve.
The highway is expected to be closed for a number of hours for the investigation and cleanup.
