Vanaman was suffering knife wounds and claimed self defense. He also faces additional charges for concealing evidence.
Vanaman was a 15-year veteran of the police force and had just been promoted to sergeant 2 months before the killing. He served the police as a technology officer and supervised the dispatch and records divisions.
Authorities said the couple's two children, ages 13 and 3 at the time, were not home at the time of the shooting.
