Hundreds of acres burn in southern NJ

A fast-moving forest fire burned more than 200 acres in southern New Jersey on Saturday, but there were no reports of injuries or homes being damaged. Authorities said the fire, which broke out in the Pinelands National Reserve along the border between Galloway Township and Egg Harbor City, was reported at about 2:15 p.m. They said one elderly resident with an existing respiratory problem was evacuated as a precaution.

Several state and area fire departments responded to the scene, and most of the blaze had been contained by late Saturday night. Authorities said moderate winds and wetness in the Atlantic County area helped keep the fire from burning out of control.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday night.
