AC freebies harder to come by

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - April 23, 2009 New figures from the state Casino Control Commission show the city's 11 casinos cut back on the freebies they hand out to keep gamblers coming back by 12.4 percent in March as the economy continued to suffer.

For the year, free hotel rooms, meals and show tickets are down more than 9 percent.

Some casinos made a conscious choice to cut back on comps when business worsened. These include the three Trump casinos, which are in bankruptcy, and Resorts Atlantic City, which is fighting off a foreclosure bid by its lender.

Atlantic City is in the third year of a revenue slump that began when slots parlors opened in the Philadelphia suburbs in late December 2006, cutting into its customer base.
