Man tried to suffocate baby in Del.

Seaford police say a New York man armed with a knife held a 3-month-old girl and her mother hostage and tried to suffocate the baby. Lt. Richard Jamison said the incident at the Meadowbridge Apartments on Tull Drive on Tuesday began with an argument over unpaid bills.

Police say the 18-year-old woman told police 26-year-old Douglas McHolder of Newburg, N.Y., held her and the infant in the apartment for more than an hour. When she tried to escape, the woman told police that McHolder tried to suffocate the infant. She said McHolder let her leave, but wouldn't let her take the infant.

McHolder is being held on attempted murder, kidnapping and weapons and endangering charges.

The girl was unharmed and has been returned to her mother.
