Savings site especially for students

October 14, 2009

"I started the site because when I started college myself," GlobeStudentdiscount.com founder Cyrus Shepard explains.

"I was supposed to graduate in four years. It took me nine years. And it was expensive. And the only thing I really learned about it was how to work the system to pay for it all." The site focuses on three main areas where students, their parents, and teachers can save money. They are travel, computers and software.

Plus, they have links to Student Discount Cards. Students or their parents can buy these cards for an annual fee -- usually around $25 -- and use them to get discounts at all sorts of retailers.

Plus, there are some surprising discounts from retailers, like Macy's and J. Crew, that most students aren't aware of.

"That's the thing, Shepard explains. "Companies have student discounts, but they don't advertise them. They're really hard to find. What we want to do is put everything together on one site and when that happens, at our website, you'll find discounts you didn't even know you qualified for."

Shepard says airline discounts on the site can run from$10 to $110 per ticket. Software discounts can be as much as 80%. And to get many of them you just need to have a school email address ending in ".edu" Or you may have to send in a copy of a recent report card.
