Parenting Perspective: Quality time

January 26, 2010

Many child psychologists say the message you give to your children when you don't spend quality time is that they are not important. And it's amazing how perceptive kids can be.

When I was a kid, my parents were often too busy or too tired to ask how was my day at school, or what my thoughts and feeling were. Today I ask my kid so many questions about his day he often rolls his eyes when he answers. But I don't mind, because he know I'm interested.

The simple act of being fully present with your child can do more for them than we can imagine.

Experts say quality time is more valuable than any gift or toy we can buy. It is the greater gift.

My son always invites me to watch TV with him or play video games with him, but quality time to me is much more. It's taking a walk, holding them, listening to them, sharing laughs and loves with them. It's an opportunity to be fully present, even if it's just a half-hour.

Kids grow up so fast. Those opportunities will be gone before you know it. Just ask my folks.
