A gift they'll prize, from Chocomize

February 9, 2010

When they didn't find jobs after college, three classmates from South Jersey decided to hire themselves. The result is Chocomize, where you design your very own chocolate bar.

Partners Eric Heinbockel, Nick La Cava and Fabian Kaempfer buy imported Belgian chocolate in milk, dark and white varieties. Then they make the bars one-by-one, adding your choice of up to five additional ingredients.

The partners taste everything so they know how combinations work. They'll make anything your heart desires, but they'll warn you against some ingredients. Someone asked for pickles, we're told.

Chocomize offers literally thousands of possible chocolate bars you can custom-order, and with priority shipping, your order will arrive in time for Valentine's Day. After graduating from Columbia University's school of business, three South Jersey men found the job market had no positions for them. Rather than turn away from what they studied, they opened their own business late last year, and Chocomize was born. It's a custom chocolate bar company.

You can choose from a list of more than 80 possibilities on their website, and they also take special requests. Each bar comes with a precise nutrition analysis. And you may order edible custom labels made from an icing-like substance and printed with a food-based ink. Customers tend to order ingredients they won't find in retail stores, so bacon - real or imitation - is the single most popular choice.

French sea salt is close by, and hot pepper is growing in popularity.

The young company is democratic in other ways. The partners let customers choose the name of the company, and Chocomize was selected from a long list of possibilities.

When you order, you also get to designate how 1% of the price is contributed to charity. There are three charities listed on the website.

The partners expected to do well with individual customers, and they are. But they didn't expect to do as well as they're doing with bulk orders for weddings, corporate events, parties and the like.

With priority shipping, your selection will arrive in time for Valentine's Day. Their products are not sold in stores and are available only online. You can check them out or place an order by accessing http://www.chocomize.com.
