How did Forbes rank the most miserable cities?

February 18, 2010

Forbes magazine looked at the nation's 200 largest metropolitan areas, an expansion from top 150 in years past.

Forbes' "Misery Measure" analyzed such factors as unemployment, sales and income taxes, commute times, violent crime, and the fortunes of professional sports teams during the past 2 seasons. Also included in the analysis were measures from a Portland, Ore., researcher Bert Sperling based on weather and Superfund pollution sites, and a statistical look at political corruption based on the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice.
