Hearings to start for education, BPU Cabinet picks

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - February 22, 2010

In choosing Schundler, Christie sent a strong signal to the state's powerful teachers union that he intends to carry out education reforms that they oppose.

Schundler tangled with the national and state teachers unions over his support of school choice when he was mayor of Jersey City.

Christie has talked often about the need to reform public education. He has made no secret of his support for charter schools and his willingness to have poorly performing schools close.

Superior Court Judge Lee Solomon's nomination to head the Board of Public Utilities also will be heard.
