Husband, wife wanted for bogus fundraiser

HOCKESSIN, Del. - April 12, 2010

Investigators were contacted about two people going door-to-door in the Meadowdale community on Thursday, April 8th.

The suspects, John and Deborah Reilly of Hockessin, would allegedly go through the community and identify themselves as new neighbors who have a daughter with juvenile diabetes. Witnesses say the couple would go on to say they were soliciting money to support research for the disease.

After receiving money from at least three neighbors, police say one resident became suspicious and was able to obtain their tag number from their minivan as they drove off.  Based on the tag, police discovered the true identities of the couple and discovered they reside in the 3000 block of Charing Cross Drive in Hockessin.

Police say they contacted the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and discovered the alleged fundraising effort was a hoax.

Arrest warrants were issued for the Reillys on charges of criminal impersonation, theft by false pretense, and conspiracy.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.
