New lead paint regulations go into effect soon

PHILADELPHIA - April 14, 2010

New federal guidelines go into effect next Thursday, requiring contractors who deal with lead-based paint to get certified and take extra precautions.

For example, they'll have to contain dust from the paint to keep it from spreading.

For consumers, that will mean longer set up and cleanup times.

These new safety rules will also come at a cost: Contractors will have to pay for additional protective gear and equipment.

The course to get certified is about $300, and it will be another $300 to apply for the certification.
