Update: Case of beaten Pleasantville student

PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. - April 15, 2010 It was April Fool's Day. Pleasantville High School had a half day and 17-year-old Jusmath Zamora was walking home when she was jumped and beaten.

"They just grabbed my hair and hit me, then they knocked my head on the floor," Zamora told Action News.

There's disagreement about how many people attacked Jusmath.

Police say a group of students surrounded her but only one -- a 16-year-old girl who's been arrested -- actually went after Jusmath, dumping a bottle of liquid in her hair.

However, witness Joshua Barley, was driving by and horrified by what he saw. He said he pulled over to intervene and help the victim, because he says as many as a dozen boys and girls participated in the attack.

"They were just going at her, just beating her, kicking her, pouring stuff on her," Barley said. "She was completely unconscious. It was like her body was lifeless."

Jusmath spent 2 days in the hospital with a concussion and is still dizzy. She says she does not know her attackers names but has seen them at school.

Jusmath is a member of both the Book Club and Step Club at school and is supposed to participate this weekend in the Miss Pleasantville Pageant. Police will not discuss a motive, but Jusmath's mother thinks it could be jealousy.

" My daughter only one and a half year been in this country, Martha Zamora told Action News, "So she doing well enough for them to hate her."

During a visit to the Zamora house, mayor Mayor Jesse Tweedle, (D), promised to look in to the conflicting accounts of what happened and a claim that a police officer on the scene immediately after the attack did not follow up when told of the beating.

"It was during the daytime. Very brazen," Tweedle said. "I'm extremely upset about it and it's not going to stop here."

For now, Jusmath is being schooled at home. It's unclear if she'll return to Pleasantville High because she and her parents are worried about her safety.
