Fatal 3-truck crash shut 26 miles of NJ Turnpike

CHESTERFIELD TWP., N.J. - May 21, 2010

A dump truck decelerating as it approached a construction area on the highway's northbound lanes in Chesterfield was rear-ended by a box truck just after 1 a.m., State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones said.

The box truck, driven by 40-year-old Leonard Doss of Magnolia, Del., swerved into a barricade, Jones said. He was declared dead at the scene.

The dump truck broke apart, and part of the vehicle remained in the center lane. A truck carrying 8,000 gallons of kerosene swerved to miss it and overturned, Jones said.

That driver, 32-year-old William Barcene, of Vineland, was flown to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.

All three northbound lanes remained closed until just after 9 a.m. Friday as workers fixed a guard rail and cleaned up spilled kerosene. By midday, one lane remained closed.
