760 Del. utility employees plan strike Friday

WILMINGTON, Del. - June 16, 2010

Delmarva has proposed benefit cuts including reduced pensions for surviving spouses and eliminating retiree medical benefits for new hires once they retire. The employees are members of Local 1238 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and have been working under a contract extension since Feb. 1.

Delmarva and Conectiv, which serve customers in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, are both owned by Pepco Holdings. The employees are mechanics, line and clerical workers as well as Conectiv power plant operators.

IBEW business manager Paul M. Simon says a walkout against Delmarva, would be the first in the union's 64 years of representing Delmarva employees.
