Soccer field thought to be perfect fit for Philly rink

COBBS CREEK - June 18, 2010

Donna Sims is trying to build a soccer field behind the Laura Sims Skate House.

The rink opened in 1985 and was the product of years of hard work by Donna's late mother Laura, whose portrait hangs over the ice and roller rink.

At the rink, the kids learn fancy footwork that helps bring smiles to their faces which Donna says was her mother's dream.

"It's amazing what sponges they are when you expose them to something positive, they just take that and they tend to excel," Sims said.

Over the years, the rink has flourished with well over 10,000 people coming annually.

But now Donna believes it's time to forge ahead with her mother's mission and is trying to raise money for a soccer field out back.

The cost is still being determined, but for Donna the benefit is clear as she looks at the success of the skating rink.

With proper funding she says the field could be ready in months and with ever-growing interest in soccer, she believes now's the time and some of the kids who have been idolizing the players in the World Cup agree.

"I want to be like them cause it's fun because you use a lot of energy [and if I had the field] I would be here every day," 11-year-old Jedarius Ross said.

Their vision doesn't end with a soccer field.

One of the board's long-term goals is to build a second story above the arena for a children's fitness center and maybe eventually even a garden on the roof to continue to educate kids about the importance of a healthy, active life.
