Malik Carter, 19, of Temple Road in West Oak Lane, has been arrested in the shooting death of Shakuwrah Muhammad, 18.
Muhammad was killed Sunday when two groups of gunmen started shooting at each other around 12:45 a.m. Sunday in the 7500 block of Rugby Street in the city's West Oak Lane section.
Muhammad was at a friend's house when she offered to walk her friend to the bus stop. Along the way a couple of boys, who the two didn't know, asked if they could join them.
Her father told Action News that one of the boys was apparently nervous about the part of town they were in.
Seconds later shots were fired. Muhammad was struck, and died at Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Authorities say Carter was aiming for the boy Muhammad was walking with, but hit her instead.
Muhammad planned on attending college in the fall with dreams of being a forensic scientist.
She had just graduated from Central High School in Olney just a few days before she died.
