Police: Pa. Granny used 8-year-old to shoplift

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) - July 2, 2010

But that may not be the case in southwestern Pennsylvania -- where a woman accused of leaving her eight-year-old granddaughter behind with stolen goods will face trial.

Fifty-year-old Elaine Weimer of Connellsville has been ordered to stand trial on shoplifting charges. She also faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child, and corruption of minors.

Workers at a Wal-Mart store testified they confronted Weimer about shoplifting on June 23, after which the girl returned nearly $200 worth of items to the store.

The employees say Weimer denied knowing the child, got in her car and drove away.

The girl isn't being charged. But she told police her grandma told her "to get stuff" for her -- and made her hold the bags.
