3 arrested for scamming elderly man of nearly $100K

CENTER CITY - July 15, 2010

Investigators say Tiffany Mitchell, George Wallace, and Sandra Anderson targeted an 80-year-old man.

They are accused of stealing close to $100,000 from the elderly man.

"They watched him for awhile so they know what he's doing; they approached him, struck up a conversation, in that conversation they talked about things he'd be familiar with," Ed Zachwieja of the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Unit said.

The alleged conspiracy began in September.

21-year-old Mitchell approached the victim from Lawncrest at 11th and Walnut streets claiming the two knew each other. The conversation led to several lunches, then Mitchell allegedly said she needed a kidney transplant.

"And then she started her acting with the tears, 'I need it, I don't want to die, I'm afraid to die,'" Zachwieja said.

Then in November, Sandra Anderson befriended the victim.

Soon, the blonde hair, blue eyed beauty convinced the elderly man to give her more than $50,000 to open a piano bar in New York. In other instances, investigators say she claimed her Center City rent was due.

"She took this poor gentleman over and continued to drain and drain," Zachwieja said.

Anderson has a long list of convictions for similar crimes.

In 2005, she was arrested along with her mother and husband for milking an Upper Darby man for more than $300,000.

Her crimes belie her pretty appearance.

"After you start studying and watching a certain individual, you can just see she has the devil in her eye," Zachwieja said.

Anderson was arrested in June. Mitchell and Wallace were caught yesterday.
