Two kayakers rescued by helicopter in NJ

WEST DEPTFORD TWP., N.J. - July 22, 2010

Karen Escovitz of Germantown tells Action News she and another kayaker became stuck in the mud in a marshy area after taking a detour.

The two say they were stuck for a couple hours when, at approximately 1:30 p.m., they decided it was time to call 911.

New Jersey State Police responded with two rescue divers, a hoist, a pilot, and a copilot.

Arriving by helicopter at around 3:30 p.m., they pulled the women out of the kayaks one at a time.

The women tell Action News they did not want to be rescued. They say they only called 911 to make sure somebody knew of their whereabouts. However, State Police say once they got the call, they couldn't leave the two women in the river.

"We couldn't just leave them there because they were obviously stranded. They tried to walk out and due to the marshy condition, they were just sinking too far in the mud, so they went back to their boats. They were perfectly safe in the boats, but they couldn't go anywhere until the water came back in," Sgt. Kevin McTeigue of the New Jersey State Police said.

Escovitz and the other woman were willing to wait until the tide changed, but police would not allow that.

After being rescued, the women were taken to a baseball field on Crown Point Avenue and hosed down by the fire department.

The kayaks, meanwhile, were left in the creek.

The women say they will try tomorrow with another boat to retrieve the stuck kayaks.

State Police say this is a good ending to the story as everyone is able to walk home tonight.
