Tuned In: The Great Unknown

August 8, 2010

We caught up with them at The General Lafayette Inn during a Philly Folk Parade concert event. They are currently on tour, and will be playing at Musikfest on August 10th.

Please enjoy their biography.

A four piece alt-folk band, from West Philadelphia, The Great Unknown convey the joy of artists making art for the sake of its creation. They are a band of musician friends who clearly enjoy their craft & don't shy away from showing it, a band in the old sense of the word, like a family, or a gang. Over the last four years, the members of this Philadelphia-based band have developed a friendship that is the source of both a collaborative creative process and an onstage dynamic that has elicited comments such as "Are you guys brothers?" and, "Those must be blood harmonies."

Maturing through constant gigging, The Great Unknown has honed in on a style that's broad enough to allow change while maintaining a focused vision to serve the song. Their music engages audiences on a variety of levels: the vocal harmonies and focus on songwriting give the band a decidedly folk heart, while the arrangements and power in performance are often that of a rock and roll band. This flexibility allows The Great Unknown to play both intimate, acoustic shows and bigger, louder rock venues.

Their songs have become part of the canon of Philadelphia's growing alt-folk community, a scene that is quickly being recognized around the country. The Great Unknown will be touring this summer in support of the self-released "The New Skin EP", four songs recorded in the spring of 2010.
