Parenting: Kids struggling with the time change?

November 8, 2010

No such luck in my house!

My son was up at 5:15am!! My daughter heard the commotion and got out of bed too. My sleepy Saturday was not unexpected. We all know kids have a hard time changing with the clocks.

Jodi Mindell, Ph.D., is a sleep expert and professor of psychology at Saint Joseph's University. "Your child should go to bed easily enough because he/she is tired. However, the problem many parents face is that their child wakes too early the next morning. Rather than getting up at 6:30 in the morning, he/she will be ready to get up for the day at 5:30."

Mindell offers suggestions for children who don't "fall back" easily:

  • Be strict about keeping to usual bedtimes, wake times, and nap times.
  • Keep your child up at night until the clock says it is time to go to bed. This will help him sleep later in the morning.
Mindell says most kids will be back on schedule in a few days, to a week. So, hang in there!
