$10 haircuts at Main Line salon

ARDMORE, Pa. - Jan. 7, 2010

But for years, savvy clients like Yvonne Miller of Malvern, have been getting their hair cut and blown dry at Jay Michael's for just $10.

"I always tell people that if you like your hair played with and you like a great haircut, you can't beat it," Miller says.

Then $10 haircut deal is available at Jay Michael's Ardmore salon on Tuesday nights, and at his Radnor salon on Wednesday nights. And there is a bit of a catch.

The discount cuts are on-the-job training for the salon's junior stylists, under the supervision of more experienced staff members.

"The cuts are beautiful," Michael insists. "The work is beautiful because it is supervised and it's a great bargain. It's good for us and it's good for the consumer."

Miller says she's never gotten a bad $10 cut.

"They have already been through cosmetology school and now they're just getting trained in Jay's techniques," Miller says. "So it's not like they're going to chop your hair off."

There are a couple of other downsides. For one thing, the $10 cuts take longer than a regular haircut.

"Where an average haircut might take 20 minutes to a half-hour, this could take an hour-and-a-half," Michael explains. "So the person has to realize, first, to have a little time."

There are a limited number of appointments available, and they usually book up a couple of weeks in advance.

Also, the student stylists don't stay students forever. Once they move onto the floor full-time, their prices do go up.
