Police: Female jogger assaulted in Lower Merion

LOWER MERION TWP., Pa. - January 6, 2011

"We want the residents to be aware, the joggers and the walkers just to be aware, that this is occurring and keep an eye out," Lt. Chris Polo of the Lower Merion Police said.

Police say at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a woman in her early 20's was jogging on Montgomery Avenue near Owen road in the Wynnewood section when she was groped by a young man riding a bike.

"And as he rode by her, he grabbed her in an indecent manner and he continued to ride through our township, she immediately made a phone call and got help there," Polo said.

Police arrived a short time later, but were unable to locate the person described as a black male, 16-18 years of age, riding a black mountain bike.

Police say this follows a previous incident on December 13th at around 1:30 p.m.

A young man fitting that description also riding a bike was suspiciously following another woman who was jogging on Wynnewood Avenue near Sabine Avenue in nearby Narberth.

"She felt uncomfortable and went to a neighbor's house for assistance, but nothing was said to her, the male didn't approach her," Polo said.

Women in the area are disturbed to hear about the police alert of the incidents.

"I think that's horrible. I can't believe it. I hope they catch him really soon," Lower Merion resident Aine Doley said.

If anyone has information regarding the person responsible or observes similar behavior while walking or jogging, you're being asked to call Lower Merion Police immediately at 9-1-1 or 610-649-1000.
