Bitter cold grips tri-state area

PHILADELPHIA - January 21, 2011

"It's really rough. It's just really, really rough," said Brandon Hawk.

With nowhere else to go in these bitter temperatures, Brandon Hawk and his friends headed to the lobby of the Camden County Administration Building that has been transformed into a warming center; a welcome alternative to the streets.

"We'd have to find an abandoned building, anything that will block the wind," said Hawk.

A Code Blue has been called which means several warming shelters are open in Camden through Monday night, like the one on North Fifth Avenue overseen by Darrell Crone.

"Even in an abandoned building you could freeze in weather like this. And in the past, that is what happened to these individual who are stuck in the street. That was one of the initiatives that sparked the Code Blue shelter," said Darrell Crone.

It was a very different scene over at Penn's Landing, where skaters actually ventured out into the freezing temperatures prepared with extra layers.

"We've got, sweatshirts, sweatpants, ski pants on," said Tara Nicoletta.

"I got on like three layers of clothes...body heat, body heat," said Tyra Wilson.

It was a night to be bundle up at the River Rink, but also to keep moving.
