University of Pennsylvania researchers have developed a simple test to reliably detect sports concussions, even during a game.
The one-minute test involves having the athlete read a series of single-digit numbers on index-sized cards.
After an injury, the athlete reads those cards again, and if the time is slower, it suggests there's been a concussion.
The test, called the King-Devick test after its developers, captures problems with eye movement, attention, and language
Those are impaired after a head injury.
Right now, it can be hard for coaches to know who has a concussionand needs to come out of the game.
The researchers reported their study on the test online in the journal Neurology.
