Giant Food, Wegmans recall salad for potential Listeria

January 26, 2011

Giant Food is recalling certain Nature's Promise organic bagged salad items.

Wegmans is also affected by the recall, as is Stop & Shop, Giant's sister supermarket chain in other East Coast markets.

The salad products were produced January 4, 2011 by State Garden, Inc. of Chelsea Massachusetts and distributed to stores on the East Coast under various sizes and brand names, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

While the packages in question have a "Best if Used By Date" of January 15, 2011 -- nearly two weeks ago -- symptoms of Listeria contamination can occur several weeks after a product is consumed.

The recall was issued after the Rhode Island Department of Health found that a sample of one of State Garden's other products -- Northeast Spring Mix Salad -- tested positive for Listeria.

Giant customers should discard the recalled products and bring the receipt to any Giant for a refund. Customers may call 1-877-846-9949. Wegmans customers should call 1-800-WEGMANS, ext. 4760 or fill out an online form. Customers with health concerns should contact their doctor.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Symptoms may include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Some miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women have been traced back to Listeria infections.
