Wilmington police involved in shootout

WILMINGTON, Del. - January 29, 2011

It all began around 7:15 p.m. when officer on patrol in the 600 block of West 5th Street tried to stop a 19-year-old Wilmington man.

Why police tried to stop the man was not immediately disclosed, however the suspect took off on foot.

During the chase, police say the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple times at an officer.

The officer returned fire and continued chasing the man until he was finally caught in the 300 block of Madison Street.

The suspect's gun was recovered. No injuries were reported.

The name of the man arrested has not yet been released.

Officers did say the man was on probation and had a GPS monitoring device on his ankle. He was also allegedly in possession of marijuana.
