Pa. senators to hear case for liquor privatization

HARRISBURG, Pa. - February 14, 2011

The Senate Law and Justice Committee will hold an informational hearing Monday afternoon.

Expected to testify are representatives of two free-market oriented think tanks and research organizations focused on alcohol policy.

Proponents say privatization could bring a financial windfall for Pennsylvania that would help wipe out a projected multibillion-dollar deficit. Newly elected Gov. Tom Corbett supports the idea, but he says policy makers need to get a clearer picture of the potential savings.

Privatization has been a priority for Republican governors for decades, but it has never garnered majority support in the Legislature.
