Lawmakers to review NJ nuclear operations

TRENTON, N.J. - April 6, 2011

The review of the state's four nuclear reactors will include the nation's oldest. It was prompted by the disaster unfolding in Japan after an earthquake and tsunami severely damaged four reactors there.

The hearing will examine safety and emergency preparedness at the 41-year-old Oyster Creek plant in Lacey Township, and three reactors in Lower Alloways Township in Salem County, called Hope Creek and Salem I and II.

Two of Japan's damaged reactors are the same design as Oyster Creek and Hope Creek.

New Jersey's top homeland security and environmental officials plan to testify along with senior executives from the plants' owners.
