Philly mayor facing unexpected primary challenge

PHILADELPHIA - May 15, 2011

The 53-year-old Nutter will face off Tuesday against 72-year-old long-shot candidate T. Milton Street, a former state legislator who recently completed a federal sentence for tax evasion. Street is the older brother of former Mayor John F. Street, who recently switched his party affiliation and may be considering an independent run in November. He has not responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Nutter says he deserves a second term, touting a decrease in the murder rate and anti-corruption efforts.

Milton Street says Nutter hasn't done enough to fight crime and says he would hire thousands for a town watch in high-crime neighborhoods.
