Dollar deals along Baltimore Avenue

WEST PHILADELPHIA - July 6, 2011

This was the scene last month at the first stroll of the summer, when businesses along Baltimore Avenue, between 42nd and 50th streets, offered dollar deals to lure shoppers and diners out of their homes.

Lori Brennan of the University City District explains, "The idea is that the businesses offer a special item or items for $1 from 5:30 - 8:30. They can can also sell their regular items at regular prices, but we advertise the $1 specials primarily to draw folks to the area."

Emily Dorn's Vix Emporium is one of the shops taking part.

"We're going to have our West Philly image on a sticker, a patch or a note card," she says. "I think it's a great promotion for Baltimore Avenue, it really gets people out and gives some awarenes off what there is along this great street."

At the Dock Street Brewery and Restaurant, the dollar specials include fresh-baked focaccia and pint logo glasses.

"It becomes kind of like a promenade of people just walking from one place to another," says Rosemarie Certo of Dock Street. "It's a lot of fun. I think it brings the community together."

In addition to dollar ice creams, brownies and cookies, there will be tofu skewers and beers. Plus, street entertainers on every block

In addition to the stroll on July 7, there will be additional strolls on August 4, 2011, and September 1, 2011. For more information on participating merchants and what they're planning to sell for one dollar, click here.
