A rash of burglaries has NJ communities on alert

MEDFORD, N.J. - July 9, 2011

Over the past two months reports of break-ins have increased.

One woman, who does not want to be identified, said burglars hit her home on Aqua Lane in Delran on Thursday.

"I don't know whether they are part of the group that needs money or they're just bad people."

Police say in the past few weeks, home burglaries have increased in several townships including Berlin, Cherry Hill and Voorhees.

In Burlington County, Medford, Pemberton, Evesham and Lumberton have had a total of two dozen break-ins in two months, and the numbers are climbing.

It is believed that the thieves are looking for specific items including cash, jewelry electronics and antiques.

Nancy Webster has been walking around her Medford, New Jersey home making sure all of her doors and windows are locked.

Police in the area say in the past few weeks, there have been almost 10 home and commercial burglaries.

"If I go to the store sometimes, I will leave the door open, but not anymore," said Nancy.

Most of the crimes have happened around Church Road near Lakeside Drive where Webster lives.

It is a rural part of Medford which is why she was surprised when her neighbor's house was hit by burglars on Wednesday.

"I think it's the flavor of the economy right now," said Nancy. "It's very quiet here, because it's a dead end street. We've never had any problems here."

Officials say several townships in Camden County have also seen similar crimes.

"It's very violating, and I think that people are desperate right now. So I guess if they got away with it once, they're looking to get away with it again and again and again," said Webster.

On Georgia O'Keefe Way, police in Evesham caught two men trying to break into a home on the fourth of July, but investigators don't know if the suspects are connected to any other burglaries.

Investigators believe they are dealing with several different thieves, but it is also possible that some of the crimes are connected.

"I believe that the Medford police, if it happens here, I think the Medford police are going to catch them," Nancy said.

Police in several communities have sent out messages by phone and email to residents warning them of the crimes and reminding them to secure their homes.

The most recent victim says she is doing what she can to protect her property.

"I've already had all the locks changed," she said.
