Police spokesman Stan Eason says the boy was picked up from his home around 8 a.m. on Wednesday and was found, still on the bus, about 1 p.m. in the maintenance yard of the Atlantic Express Bus Company.
Eason says the boy was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution but did not seem to be seriously injured.
The boy was headed to a summer program for special needs students.
Eason says police investigating how the bus driver and an aide on the bus overlooked the boy and whether criminal charges are warranted.
A spokeswoman for Atlantic Express says the bus driver and driver's aide have been fired.
