Stem cells used to treat dog left on hot Pa. roof

READING, Pa. - August 15, 2011

The Reading Eagle reports a city police officer found the stranded pit bull with its paws burned off. The dog had been left on the roof for at least 10 hours.

A veterinarian attempted to regrow the pads on the dog's paws by using stem cells harvested from another animal, a first-of-its-kind procedure that required federal regulatory approval.

Veterinarian Dr. Boyd Wagner says it's unclear whether the experimental procedure was successful. But he says the dog, dubbed Bernie, "seems to be happy."

Law enforcement officials are looking for the pit bull's owner. An award is being offered for information leading to the owner's arrest.
