2 officers, woman, suspect injured in crash

SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA - October 16, 2011

The robbery was reported to be happening at the intersection of 61st Street and Elmwood Avenue just after 10:00 a.m.

Police went into a brief pursuit of a gold Oldsmobile Alero. The Alero ran a red light during the pursuit and struck a van.

At that time, the driver of the Alero fled from his vehicle on foot.

The police vehicle came in contact with the suspect, pinning him between the car and a store front property.

Two police officers were injured during the accident along with the suspect and one other person.

All four were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania by medics.

One police officer suffered from lacerations to his forehead and may require stitches. He is listed in stable condition.

The second officer was transported to the hospital with head pain after striking his head inside the vehicle. He is expected to be treated and released.

The driver of the van, a 69-year-old female, sustained fractures to her ribs and lungs and is listed in stable condition.

The suspect, a 24-year-old male, suffered from multiple injuries to both legs. He is listed in critical condition and is in police custody at the hospital.

Police continue to investigate.
