Surveillance video shows NJ serial arsonist

BERLIN, N.J. - January 25, 2012

Berlin police released surveillance video of a man they say set one fire after another behind the Berlin Circle Plaza on route 73.

Moments after the suspected arsonist walked away from the dumpster seen in the video, a ball of fire erupted.

Lieutenant Leonard Check says the man threw down some type of accelerant and set fires in six different locations on the night of December 17th.

To add to this mystery police are trying to figure why the arsonist set all of the fires directly behind a Home Depot.

"There's really no reason that we can determine why the Home Depot was targeted, we just feel it was maybe a crime of opportunity," Lt. Check said.

Police say the man tried to set the building on fire while people were inside.

In 2006, someone set four fires over a three-month period in the same location so home depot installed cameras.

Detectives are looking into all of the cases to see if they're connected.

Police say the middle aged arsonist had a unique walk and was wearing what looks like a satchel.

They believe he's local since he knew about a path to make his getaway.

It's the same trail people in the nearby Pinecrest neighborhood use to get to the shopping center.

If you have any tips, you're urged to give police a call.
