Fmr. Pa. judge's wife charged with perjury, obstruction

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - February 2, 2012

Prosecutors say Susan Liberace, 42, of Havertown, Pa. made false statements under oath and tried to protect her husband, former district justice Gerald Liberace, from being tried and punished for his actions.

Gerald Liberace was found guilty in January 2011 of corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children.

He was arrested after police in Delaware County intercepted a call in which he said he was "sorry" if he did things to a young girl that "were not proper."

Authorities say Gerald Liberace had inappropriate contact with that girl in August 2004 and that it continued. The allegations were reported to law enforcement in July 2009. He was sentenced to 6 to 12 months in the Delaware County Jail and 2 years probation.

According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, a grand jury found that Susan Liberace made numerous false and conflicting statements to investigators, to the grand jury, and during her husband's trial.

"Providing false information to hamper a grand jury investigation is a serious criminal offense," Kelly said.

Susan Liberace is charged with three counts of perjury, all third-degree felonies which are each punishable by up to seven years in prison and $15,000 fines.

She is also charged with six counts of false swearing, all second-degree misdemeanors which are each punishable by up to two years in prison and $5,000 fines.

Additionally Susan Liberace is charged with one count of obstructing the administration of law or other governmental function and one count of hindering apprehension or prosecution, both second-degree misdemeanors which are each punishable by up to two years in prison and $5,000 fines.

Susan Liberace was arraigned Thursday before Collegeville, Montgomery County, Magisterial District Judge Cathleen Kelly Rebar and released on $15,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 7th.
