Elderly woman killed in Levittown fire

LEVITTOWN, Pa. - March 2, 2012

The blaze broke out around 11:30 a.m. at the Foxwood Manor Apartments off Veterans Highway, killing 74-year-old Beverly O'Boyle.

Authorities say the fire started on a couch. The victim tried to get water to put out the flames but was overcome by smoke.

"She got up, she went to the kitchen, tried to extinguish the fire by getting some water and at that point it appears she was overcome," said Middletown Township Fire Marshal Jim McGuire.

The damage from the fire was contained to the one apartment.

Investigators haven't determined the cause of the fire. They say smoking is a possibility but the Fire Marshal says there are conflicting reports about whether the victim smoked.

A widow who lived alone, Boyle was known to many of her neighbors because she tooled around her complex in a motorized scooter.

"She'd wave, she was quiet and she wouldn't really talk that much. I'm going to really miss her. She was in her little scooter and she'd come around and say hi," said Theresa Beacher, a neighbor.

Officials say an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
