The crash happened around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday on the 6300 block of Market Street in Upper Darby.
Police say the driver was speeding, lost control of the car, and hit the support beam for the Market-Frankford El.
The collision was so powerful that it sent the car's engine into a nearby field where it started a small fire.
The driver and two passengers went to the hospital. One person is in critical condition - the other two are expected to be OK.
There is no word on charges at this time.
