Police: Del. bookkeeper stole more than $400,000

MILLSBORO, Del. - March 23, 2012

Valerie Onley, 41, of Salisbury, Md., worked as a bookkeeper for Westwood Farms, Inc. of Millsboro, Del.

Police say from August 25, 2009 to August 19, 2011 Onley was in charge of managing the company's payroll and paying its bills. During that time, police say, she stole money from the company by writing checks to herself and her husband, using business credit cards for personal purchases, and using the company funds to pay her personal bills.

In all, the alleged thefts total more than $400,000.00.

Onley's husband, James A. Onley Jr., 41, also of Salisbury, Md., is also being charged in connection with the thefts. Police say he cashed over $20,000 worth of checks that were written to him on the company's business account.

James Onley is currently incarcerated in Maryland on unrelated charges. Police say he will be processed on the new charges upon his return to Delaware.

Valerie Onley has been arraigned and was committed to the Delores J. Baylor Correctional Institute on $24,500 secured bail.
