NM border town to declare vacant mayor spot

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - April 06, 2012

Sunland Park's interim mayor tells KRQE (http://bit.ly/HjzISv ) that the city council will meet Tuesday to declare the mayor's office vacant since Daniel Salinas couldn't meet Thursday's deadline.

Isabel Santos says Gerardo Hernandez is a front-runner for the vacancy. He was the subject of an alleged extortion plot that included a video of him receiving a lap dance from a topless woman.

Salinas was barred from taking the oath of office after he was accused of trying to force Hernandez out of the race with the video. His terms of release prohibit him from having contact with the clerk who administers the oath.
