Woman killed in Washington Township fire

WASHINGTON TWP., NJ -April 7, 2012

Fire crews spent the afternoon boarding up the destroyed home of the 56 year old victim.

It appears the fire started on the side of the house and moved toward the bedroom where the woman was most likely sleeping.

The flames shot into the air just after midnight as the fire on Golfview Drive in Washington Township ripped through the home killing 56 year old Darlene Starett.

"It was just a wall of flames," said Andy Hankin. "It looked like it started on the right end of the house and it went to the left. I don't think she stood a chance, to be honest with you."

Andy Hankin says he watched firefighters work quickly to get a handle on the raging fire. He was unsure if his neighbor or her adult son, who also lived in the house, were inside.

Firefighters broke one window and helped the family dog jump to safety. They broke another and discovered Starrett inside a second floor bedroom.

They pulled her out and rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Hankin and the woman had been neighbors since the late 80s.

"She had a tragic incident right after we moved in. Her husband was t-boned heading to work one time. He got killed by a truck, and she had to raise her two children by herself, so she was pretty busy with that," Hankin said.

The victim's son was working in King of Prussia at the time of the fire.

Neighbors spotted the son and daughter Saturday morning staring at the devastating aftermath of the fire that took their mother's life.

"Our prayers are definitely with her family at this point," said Hankin.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's office and fire marshal are waiting on an electrical engineer to inspect what is left of the house.

An autopsy shows that Starett died of carbon monoxide and smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
