People say they heard a loud boom and then lost power for a bit.
PECO crews have been working all day to try and figure out what went wrong and just how many homes and businesses were affected.
PECO crews were busy inspecting homes on Mill Road in Buckingham Township after a power surge fried several meters.
"It was scary, like I've never been so scared," said Mary Pat English-Craig. "When you hear this boom, you think your house is blowing up."
Mary Pat English-Craig and many of her neighbors were startled just after 7:00am.
Her hot tub, printer, and DVR are now not working, and she is worried that they may have been damaged.
Her other electronics were spared thanks to a surge protector which was smoking after the jolt of electricity.
"I smelled something funny up in my office and clearly my surge protector had blown up," Mary said.
About 25 homes suffered damaged meters and roughly 2,400 others had a brief outage.
In Doylestown, the power cut off at the Center Square Towers, a senior residential living center.
A freight elevator was damaged, but a maintenance supervisor says residents weren't affected.
Around the corner, an office heater began smoking at the Michener Art Museum. There was no reported damage.
PECO replaced the damage meters and says an equipment malfunction caused two aerial power lines to come in contact which led to the surge.
It seems most residents in the affected area had surge protectors minimizing damage.
"We had our kitchen redone about three years ago. They installed a completely different system with surge protectors on them for our appliances and all of that. I've heard of real trouble with people losing their appliances," said Amanda Buschi.
A spokeswoman with PECO says in general when equipment malfunctions, it is the responsibility of the company to reimburse customers for any damage; but it is on a case by case basis.
